Weneverpassedahumanbeingthisday。Somewildcattlerusheduptousandawayfromus;antelopestaredatusfromahundredyards;coyotesranskulkingthroughthesage-brushtowatchusfromahill;atournoonmealwekilledarattlesnakeandshotsomeyoungsagechickens,whichweregoodatsupper,roastedatourcampfire。

Byhalf-pasteightwewereasleepbeneaththestars,andbyhalf-pastfourIwasdrinkingcoffeeandshivering。Thehorse,Buck,washardtocatchthissecondmorning。Whethersomehillsthatwewerenowinhadexcitedhim,orwhetherthebetterwaterupherehadcausedaneffervescenceinhisspirits,Icannotsay。

ButIwasashotasJulybythetimewehadhimsafeinharness,or,rather,unsafeinharness。ForBuck,inthemysteriouslanguageofhorses,nowtaughtwickednesstohissidepartner,andabouteleveno’clocktheylaidtheirevilheadstogetheranddecidedtobreakournecks。

Severalcow-boysarrivedonagalloptofindhowmanypiecesofuswereleft。Wereturneddownthehill;andwhenwereachedmytrunk,itwassurprisingtoseethedistancethatourrunawayhadcovered。Myhatwasalsofound,andwecontinuedonourway。

BuckandMugginswerepatternsofdiscretionthroughelserestofthemountains。IthoughtwhenwecampedthisnightthatitwasstrangeBuckshouldbeagainallowedtograzeatlarge,insteadofbeingtiedtoaropewhileweslept。Butthiswasmyignorance。Withthehardworkthathewasgallantlydoing,thehorseneededmorepasturethanarope’slengthwouldpermithimtofind。Thereforehewentfree,andinthemorninggaveusbutlittletroubleincatchinghim。
